In a first, CBI books its Special Director in corruption charges

The Central Bureau of Investigation has filed an FIR against its own second-in-command special director Rakesh Asthana, on the basis of a complaint filed by one Satish Babu Sana, alleging that he had paid bribes through a Dubai-based middleman claiming to know Asthana. Sana, who is a key witness in the highprofile Moin Qureshi case, claimed he had *agreed to pay Rs 5 crore to CBI special director* Rakesh Asthana after a middleman showed a display picture of his contact on his WhatsApp number. The middleman allegedly claimed the WhatsApp picture belonged to his contact in the CBI. The FIR names Asthana along with CBI deputy superintendent of police Devender Kumar. The complainant has claimed he was shown Asthana’s picture on a WhatsApp number by a Dubai-based middleman. Moreover, Satish Babu Sana claimed he was made to overhear a conversation over the phone between the middleman and an individual giving instructions to look into Sana’s case. The other individual, Sana claimed he was told by the middleman, was Asthana. Without disclosing Asthana’s name in its remand application, the CBI on October 19 told a court that the said CBI officer has been named in the complaint.
